Fritz Hansen
Fritz Hansen's history began in 1872, when the enterprising cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen from Nakskov solves business letters in Copenhagen. 1885 is a crucial year in which he starts his own business for the production of furniture, and 2 years later he had succeeded in creating a thriving workshop in Christianshavn in the heart of Copenhagen. Fritz and his son Christian laid the foundation for the high quality level which has since been Fritz Hansen's trademark for the products.
In the beginning of the century, the far-sighted Christian E. Hansen, son of Fritz Hansen, began experimenting with steam bending of beech and in the 1930s, the technique had been refined so that Fritz Hansen became among the world's leaders in this field, which would later develop into the company's specialty: Furniture made of laminated wood.
The 1950s were completely dominated by Arne Jacobsen. The collaboration was initiated in 1934, but the breakthrough came when Arne Jacobsen created the laminated chair Myren ™. The chair later lead to the endless success story of the Series 7 ™ chair - and other molded lamellae. The inspiration for Myren came from Hvidt & Mølgaard's AX series, and the introduction of the laminating technique and of separable furniture is still a milestone in Fritz Hansen's history.
Arne Jacobsen's star shines even more clearly, as the classic style icons The Egg ™ and the Swan ™, designed for the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, are created. The introduction of his Series 3300 ™ further enhances the myth.
In the years to come and untill today Fritz Hansen worked with designers like Verner Panton, Piet Hein, Bruno Matsson, Børge Mogensen, Hans J. Wegner and several other well known designers.
